The Edo State Government has enacted a new law imposing stricter penalties on secret cult activities, replacing the Edo State Secret Cult (Prohibition) Law of 2018.
The Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law, 2025, passed by the Edo State House of Assembly and signed by Governor Monday Okpebholo, officially took effect on January 24, 2025.
The new legislation introduces harsher punishments for individuals involved in cult-related activities, including sponsors, harborers, and active members.
Key provisions of the law, as noticed by WorldClass247News, include:Section 5: A 21-year prison sentence for individuals who provide financial or material support to secret cults, Section 6: A 10-year prison sentence for those who knowingly harbor cultists or allow cult meetings on properties under their control. Additionally, such properties will be confiscated and demolished by the government.
Others are, Section 12: Cultists who assault, injure, maim, or kill in furtherance of cult activities face 21 years in prison without an option of fine. If their actions result in death, they will face the death penalty. Their properties, including their residence, will also be seized and demolished.
In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, the Edo State Government, urged residents to adhere to the law and avoid any involvement in activities that threaten the peace, security, and development of the state.
