The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed a fatal multiple-vehicle crash that claimed 12 lives at Gada Biyu along the Yangoji–Abuja corridor on Sunday, January 11, 2026.
According to the FRSC, the crash occurred at about 11:45 a.m. and involved four commercial vehicles: a trailer transporting coal, a bus, and two cars. Preliminary investigations indicated that excessive speed and dangerous driving led to a loss of control by the trailer driver, who reportedly crashed into vehicles that were already parked at the scene.
A total of 18 people were involved in the incident, including eight adult males, four adult females, two male children, and four female children. Five victims died instantly, while seven others who were rescued and taken to hospital later died from their injuries, bringing the death toll to 12.
Three other victims sustained injuries of varying degrees, including fractures, head injuries, bruises, and cuts, and are currently receiving medical treatment.
FRSC operatives said they received a distress call at 11:47 a.m. and arrived at the scene within seven minutes. The injured were evacuated to Abaji General Hospital, while the deceased were released to their families for burial. The Motor Traffic Division (MTD) in Kwali has taken over the investigation to determine further liabilities.
The Corps also cleared the wreckage from the road to restore traffic flow and prevent secondary crashes along the busy route.
Reacting to the incident, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, described the crash as tragic and avoidable, and commiserated with the families of the victims. He warned motorists, particularly drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, against speeding and reckless driving, stressing the importance of complying with speed limits and traffic regulations.
Mohammed reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to sustained enforcement, public education, and collaboration with stakeholders to reduce road traffic crashes and improve safety on Nigerian roads.
