Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has officially opened the Banki International Cattle Market and two other significant projects in Bama local government council, of the state.
The newly launched International Cattle Market, aimed at boosting economic growth and improving local livelihoods, is a 450m x 450m facility enclosed by a perimeter fence spanning 1.8 kilometers.
The market features 12 large ruminant sheds, three small ruminant sheds, lock-up shops, market stalls, a water supply system, and an administrative block that includes offices, a conference hall, and essential conveniences.
The ceremonial ribbon-cutting was performed by Midjiyawa Bakari, the Governor of the Far North Region in the Republic of Cameroon.
Governor Zulum highlighted the importance of the market, noting that it would strengthen cross-border trade with neighboring countries, including Cameroon and Chad.
He stated, “As part of our efforts to rejuvenate commerce and enhance cross-border trade, we have established the Banki International Cattle Market, replacing a smaller village market that was devastated by years of conflict. This market will serve as a critical trade hub for Borno, Cameroon’s Far North Region, and Chad, contributing to economic recovery.”
In addition to the cattle market, Governor Zulum, also inaugurated a new 20-classroom secondary school equipped with laboratories, along with three units of 3-bedroom internal staff quarters and five blocks of ten 2-bedroom teachers’ quarters.
Another major development was the unveiling of the Government Lodge, which, according to him, will provide accommodation for government officials and dignitaries visiting the region.
To foster cultural exchange and enhance international relations, Governor Zulum also announced that pupils from two communities in Cameroon, Amchide and Limani, would be admitted to the newly inaugurated secondary school in Banki.
He explained that the initiative, is part of a student exchange program, aims to ease the burden on students who previously had to travel to Mora for secondary education.
