The Edo State Security Corps has arrested three suspected kidnappers in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Council of the state. The arrest was confirmed by the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, retired Commissioner of Police Friday Ibadin, during a press briefing in Benin City.
He revealed that the breakthrough came after a distress call from a woman led his team to the criminals.
According to Ibadin, the woman, identified as Mrs. Ufuha Rita, called for help while hiding in the bush as armed men stormed her residence.
“Security operatives immediately mobilized for a rescue operation, safely evacuating the victim before apprehending three of the seven suspected kidnappers based on her identification.” He stated.
Ibadin warned criminals operating in the state that the security corps, in collaboration with sister agencies, would make the state unsafe for them.
“We have received multiple complaints about frequent kidnappings and other criminal activities in Esan land. As a result, we mobilized our men for patrol and bush combing.
Three days ago, while on our way to Esan land, we got a distress call from Mrs. Ufuha Rita, who claimed she was targeted by kidnappers sent by the leader of the Esan Awareness Group, one Mr. Bruce, who resides in Sweden,” Ibadin stated.
The security commander further explained that the arrested suspects—Asene Ogah (49), Ibhafidon Eric (29), and Ekpu Godfrey (44)—were part of a group that allegedly invaded Rita’s home. She later guided security operatives to the suspects’ hideouts, leading to their arrest.
The suspects reportedly made significant confessions about their involvement in past kidnappings. One of them, Ekpu Godfrey, admitted to previous participation in abductions but claimed he had since withdrawn from such activities. Security personnel recovered two locally made pump-action guns from the suspects.
Ibadin emphasized that the Edo State Security Corps is a legally recognized entity, and any other security outfit operating in the state must be officially approved. He described the Esan Awareness Group as an unauthorized body and warned against illegal security operations.
