The Director of Taraba State Sports Council, George Shitta, has called on the National Sports Commission and other key stakeholders to adopt scientific and data-driven methods for screening athletes, as a means of tackling age cheating in youth competitions.
Speaking at the ongoing 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, Shitta expressed concerns over the reliability of the current manual screening system, which he claims has failed to effectively identify over-aged participants.
“The present method is not effective enough,” Shitta stated. “We need a standardized approach that uses verifiable data and medical testing to ensure a level playing field for all athletes.”
He warned that continued reliance on outdated screening procedures undermines the integrity of youth competitions and called for urgent reforms that incorporate technology and scientific tools to verify athletes’ ages.
Despite his concerns, Shitta remained optimistic about Team Taraba’s prospects at the Games. He revealed that most of the team’s events were scheduled to commence Tuesday and voiced confidence in the athletes’ chances of winning medals.
He also praised the positive atmosphere within the Taraba camp, crediting the state government for its support in ensuring the welfare of athletes, coaches, and officials.
Several athletes from Team Taraba echoed Shitta’s sentiments, expressing gratitude to Governor Agbu Kefas for his continued support. They pledged to give their best performances and bring pride to the state.
