The Customs Area Controller of the Seme Area Command, Comptroller Ben Oramalugo, has called for stronger inter-agency cooperation to address national security concerns and secure Nigeria’s borders more effectively.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by students of the Nigerian Army Intelligence School, Oramalugo stressed that no single agency can function in isolation and that collective efforts are critical to safeguarding the country and enhancing its economic growth.
“Your visit today underscores the importance of inter-agency collaboration in securing Nigeria’s borders and promoting economic prosperity,” he told the delegation.
The Customs chief also raised the alarm over worsening environmental conditions along the Seme coastline, warning that ocean encroachment poses a serious threat to critical infrastructure.
“The Seme coastline is experiencing severe ocean encroachment, endangering infrastructure at the Joint Border Post and nearby Customs facilities. This environmental challenge requires urgent government intervention to prevent further damage,” Oramalugo stated.
On security operations, the Comptroller highlighted the command’s ongoing efforts to tackle smuggling and cross-border crimes, noting that the Service is engaging local stakeholders to promote legal means of livelihood and discourage involvement in illicit trade.
“There are other lawful ways to earn a living besides smuggling. We are engaging stakeholders to encourage alternatives and reduce dependence on illicit trade,” he said.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to enhancing border security, facilitating legitimate trade, and improving revenue generation.
Responding, the Deputy Commandant of the Nigerian Army Intelligence School, Colonel Taofeek Yakubu, who led the delegation, lauded the Comptroller for the warm reception and reaffirmed the school’s resolve to strengthen inter-agency ties in the interest of national development.
