The Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDPGF) has ruled out any plans to join a political merger, even as speculation mounts nationwide over potential alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This decision was part of a communique issued at the Forum’s 4th meeting of 2025, held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday, April 15.
The governors resolved that while the PDP will not merge with any other political group or party, it remains open to welcoming individuals and parties seeking to join forces in the fight for power and good governance in the next election cycle.
Addressing internal party matters, the Forum endorsed the Deputy National Secretary to act in place of the National Secretary, following a recent Supreme Court judgment.
A substantive replacement is expected to be nominated and ratified by the National Executive Committee (NEC) from the South East zone during its next session.
On national issues, the governors emphasized their determination to safeguard constitutional democracy, revealing their decision to seek Supreme Court clarification on the legal framework for declaring a state of emergency.
The move follows the controversial declaration in Rivers State. The Forum declared its full support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the people of the state, vowing to stand with them throughout the crisis.
Raising concerns about rising insecurity, the Forum cited worsening conditions in Borno, Plateau, Katsina, and Edo States.
The governors called for a restructuring of national security strategies, including empowering sub-national governments to better respond to security threats. They also condemned recent attacks in Plateau State and expressed condolences to affected communities.
In a move to strengthen internal party organization, the Forum resolved to convene a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on May 27, 2025. The meeting will also pave the way for an early national convention, scheduled for August 28–30, in Kano.
The communique also announced the composition of two key committees which are zoning and national convention committees
