The Nigerian National Institute for Sports (NIS) is set to open a new branch in Adamawa State, a move widely welcomed by the state government as a significant boost to sports development in the Northeast region.
Deputy Governor of Adamawa State, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the establishment of the institute’s campus in the state. She made the commendation on Thursday while receiving the Director-General of the NIS in her office.
Farauta reiterated the administration’s commitment to promoting sports as a unifying force among youths, emphasizing that sports development remains a priority.
She assured the institute of the government’s support and partnership to strengthen the sporting industry across the Northeast.
According to her, engaging young people in sports is crucial for fostering national unity and enhancing social cohesion.
Earlier, the NIS Director-General explained that the new campus will provide training for coaches, sports managers, and sports scientists, with the goal of improving sports performance statewide.
He disclosed that the state office—expected to begin operations in the first quarter of next year—will offer 34 basic sports courses, while diploma and certificate programs will be available at the zonal level.
He added that Nigeria has the capacity to produce world-class coaches and athletes, stressing the need to invest in training: “It is time for us to coach our coaches and athletes who will bring home national and international laurels,” he said.
The DG called for continued government support to reclaim Nigeria’s standing in global sports, expressing gratitude to President Tinubu for revitalizing the previously moribund institute.
During the visit, the NIS management aa noticed by the WorldClass247News, presented the state government with a letter of engagement and a 10-year strategic plan for sports development.
