The Headquarters of 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army, has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that soldiers unlawfully arrested a student of Taraba State University, Mr. Yebsonya Gamboro, on Friday, October 10, 2025.
In a statement signed by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, the Brigade clarified that contrary to online allegations, Mr. Gamboro was not part of the students initially apprehended for illegally wearing military camouflage during a campus social event. Those students, the statement noted, were immediately released after questioning.
According to the Army, subsequent events revealed that Mr. Gamboro was later seen wearing military camouflage and was confronted by Manga Emmanuel Manga, a 200-level Computer Science student and military Ex-Boy.
The confrontation reportedly escalated into an altercation, during which Mr. Manga was allegedly assaulted by Mr. Gamboro and some friends he had called to the scene.
The statement further disclosed that Mr. Manga’s mobile phone went missing during the scuffle, prompting some of his colleagues to seek help in bringing Mr. Gamboro in for questioning.
“He was later released the following morning and handed over to the university security officer for further investigation and administrative action to recover the missing phone,” the Army said.
The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and fostering cordial relations with educational institutions in Taraba State.
It also issued a stern warning against the unauthorized use of military uniforms, citing Sections 110(1) and 251 of the Criminal Code Act, which prohibit civilians from wearing or using military uniforms or accoutrements.
“The Brigade does not condone any act of indiscipline or abuse of authority and encourages members of the public to always verify information before dissemination,” the statement emphasized.
