The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) has called on authorities in Nigeria to urgently investigate and, if warranted, prosecute an individual identified as Alex Barbir over a viral video allegedly promoting violence in Plateau State.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the group expressed alarm over the circulation of the footage, which it said appears to show Barbir engaging in hate speech and encouraging attacks against Muslims and other minority communities. MPAC, however, noted that it has not independently verified the authenticity of the video.
Despite this uncertainty, the organization warned that, if genuine, the content could inflame tensions in already fragile areas, potentially triggering further violence, loss of life, and destruction of property.
“We demand that the relevant authorities act swiftly to investigate this matter and bring anyone found culpable to justice,” the statement read.
MPAC described the alleged rhetoric as a grave threat to national unity, cautioning that such messages could embolden individuals to resort to vigilante actions. It also raised concerns about what it termed “double standards” in addressing incitement cases, suggesting that similar incidents in other countries often receive faster responses.
The group further urged security and intelligence agencies to take proactive measures to prevent escalation and ensure the protection of vulnerable populations. It added that if the video is eventually proven to be fabricated, those responsible for creating and disseminating it should also face legal consequences.
The statement, as noticed by WorldClass247News, was signed by Disu Kamor, Executive Chairman of MPAC, who reiterated the organization’s commitment to peace, justice, and national stability.
