The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the commencement of political campaigns ahead of the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.
In a statement released by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, INEC disclosed that campaign activities by political parties are permitted to begin from Wednesday, September 24, 2025. The campaign period will run until midnight on Thursday, February 19, 2026—just two days before the elections, which are scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026.
INEC also emphasized the importance of maintaining decorum during the campaign period. The Commission urged all political parties and candidates to conduct their campaigns with civility, and to avoid inflammatory language or actions that could incite unrest.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to free, fair, and peaceful elections in the FCT.
