The House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the Constitution has extended the deadline for submissions on the creation of additional states and local governments in Nigeria.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, Levinus Nwabughiogu, announced that the new deadline is now March 26, 2025, replacing the initial March 5, 2025 deadline.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who also chairs the Review Committee, explained that the extension was granted in response to public requests for additional time. He reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to supporting legitimate proposals that align with constitutional provisions.
Kalu also reminded proponents that any request for new states or local governments must adhere to Section 8(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, which mandates support from at least a two-thirds majority of representatives from the affected area.
He emphasized that only submissions meeting the stipulated guidelines will be considered by the committee.
