In a major political shake-up, governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alongside 23 members of the State House of Assembly.
The governor made the announcement on Wednesday during a press briefing at the Executive Council Chamber of the Bayelsa State Government House in Yenagoa.
While Diri confirmed his resignation from the PDP, he did not disclose the political party he intends to join.
His decision was immediately backed by 23 lawmakers, led by the Speaker of the House, marking one of the most significant mass defections in the state’s recent political history.
This development comes barely 24 hours after governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State also left the PDP for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), signaling growing shifts in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next election cycle.
The PDP has not yet issued an official statement responding to the defections.
