Security operatives in Edo State have recovered firearms and ammunition during coordinated stop-and-search operations across parts of the state, as investigations intensify into a recent killing in Oredo Local Government Area.
The operation, carried out by the state’s Special Security Squad code-named Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists, followed a directive from Governor Monday Okpebholo after an early morning killing reported on Friday, February 13, 2026, at Eboh Quarters, Estate Gate, in Oredo.
Arms Recovered During Sweep
According to the Secretary of the Special Squad, Izegaegbe John, operatives moved into strategic locations including Iriri off Airport Road and the Oluku axis as early as 6 a.m. on Saturday.
He said the intensified sweep led to the recovery of a K2 Army magazine loaded with live ammunition inside an abandoned vehicle. The occupants of the vehicle reportedly fled upon sighting security personnel.
“We combed the length and breadth of Benin metropolis, and for the first time, we recovered a K2 Army magazine loaded with live ammunition inside a vehicle. All the occupants fled, but we recovered the vehicle and the K2 magazine,” John said.
Killing Not Cult-Related, Officials Say
John disclosed that the squad received a distress call at about 6:13 a.m. on Friday reporting a killing in the community. Upon arrival, operatives confirmed that the victim, identified as Mr. Courage, popularly known as “Dogo,” had been killed.
Contrary to initial speculation, authorities said the incident was not cult-related but stemmed from a dispute over park ticketing activities.
Although the Edo State Government had banned certain ticketing operations, the deceased was allegedly involved in illegal ticketing and accused by some individuals of failing to properly share proceeds. The disagreement, investigators said, allegedly led to a conspiracy that resulted in his death.
Preliminary findings indicate that a 9mm Beretta pistol was used in the attack, with cartridges recovered at the scene.
The killing reportedly triggered a reprisal attack along Wire Road by individuals who mistakenly believed certain persons were responsible for the initial incident.
Arrests Made, Investigation Ongoing
John confirmed that several suspects have been arrested and are providing information that may lead to further arrests.
He reiterated the state government’s stance against cultism and kidnapping, assuring residents that the Special Security Squad remains committed to maintaining law and order.
Residents were urged to provide timely and credible information to security agencies, as authorities maintain that the situation is under control and that those found culpable will face prosecution.
