The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the September 2024 Edo governorship election, Asue Ighodalo, has condemned alleged acts of violence and harassment aimed at disrupting the legal process to challenge the election results.
Addressing reporters outside the courthouse, Ighodalo expressed gratitude to Edo voters and reaffirmed his confidence in the judiciary as the election tribunal deliberates on the contentious outcome.
“We strongly believe the judiciary will uphold justice. Our mission is to reclaim our mandate and focus on eradicating poverty, eliminating fear, and unlocking Edo State’s potential for the benefit of its people,” Ighodalo said.
He also highlighted reports of intimidation, including the presence of a masked gunman outside the courthouse, calling such actions deliberate attempts to distract his team.
“These acts of intimidation will not deter us. We remain resolute in our pursuit of justice,” he added.
Tensions have escalated with recent developments, including an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) raid on a Benin hotel allegedly housing PDP witnesses.
While the EFCC confirmed the operation, it denied any political motivation behind the raid.
Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the PDP’s Edo Caretaker Committee, accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating intimidation tactics.
“The use of thugs disguised as PDP supporters and state agencies like the EFCC is a desperate and unacceptable strategy,” Aziegbemi stated.
Despite the challenges, Ighodalo reassured his supporters of his commitment to the tribunal process and expressed optimism that justice would prevail for himself and his deputy, Osarodion Ogie.
