Councillors in Bekwarra Local Government Area, Cross River State, have impeached Chairman, Theresa Ushie, widely known as the ‘Queen of Bekwarra Nation,’ over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
The impeachment, supported by nine out of ten councillors, was based on accusations of maladministration, financial misappropriation, and a breakdown in governance.
Key concerns included secrecy in revenue management, lack of transparency, and mismanagement of public funds.
In response to the crisis, the state government has convened an emergency meeting, with the Acting Governor ordering Ushie’s immediate reinstatement.
The situation, at the time of filing this report, remains tense as stakeholders deliberate on the next course of action.
