The Borno State Government has commissioned the second phase of the newly constructed General Hospital in Biu, further solidifying its commitment to enhancing healthcare delivery across the state.
The facility, built and fully equipped by the World Health Organisation (WHO), is a state-of-the-art addition to the region’s healthcare infrastructure.
The commissioning ceremony was conducted on behalf of the Deputy Governor, Umar Usman Kadafur, by the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Professor Baba Malam Gana.
Speaking at the event, Professor Gana expressed the Deputy Governor’s satisfaction, calling the project a significant milestone in the state’s health sector transformation.
“This occasion is a powerful testament to our government’s resolve to prioritise the health and well-being of our citizens,” said Professor Gana. He credited the initiative to the leadership of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, who has made healthcare a key focus of his administration.
The newly inaugurated phase addresses the increasing demand for healthcare services in Biu due to population growth and limited existing facilities.
According to state officials, similar infrastructure upgrades are planned for Monguno, reinforcing the government’s dedication to equitable access to quality healthcare throughout Borno State.
Professor Gana extended heartfelt appreciation to the WHO for its continuous support, calling the project “a shining example of a fruitful and impactful partnership.”
He assured the international body that the hospital would be fully utilised to serve the healthcare needs of Biu and surrounding communities.
Dr. Walter Kazadi Mulombo, WHO Country Representative to Nigeria, commended the state government for its visionary approach. “We are proud to support the health needs of Borno’s people and are committed to continued collaboration,” he stated.
Also speaking, Professor Abubakar Kullima, Chief Medical Director of the Borno State Hospital Management Board, praised the WHO’s comprehensive assistance and encouraged other development partners to follow suit. He confirmed that the hospital is ready to commence operations immediately for the benefit of the public.
The Emir of Biu, Alhaji Mustapha Aliyu Umar Mustapha II, represented by Barrister Ibrahim Shehu Birma, celebrated the commissioning, highlighting it as the third major health facility launched in Biu within the year, following the opening of eye and dental hospitals by Governor Zulum.
The commissioning of General Hospital, as noted by WorldClass247News, marks a major leap in Borno State’s healthcare agenda and stands as a model of effective collaboration between government and international partners to meet vital development goals.
