Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has launched the reconstruction of the Alau Dam, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to restoring livelihoods and infrastructure in Borno State following the devastating 2024 floods.
The dam, originally built between 1984 and 1986, collapsed on September 10, 2024, causing catastrophic flooding that claimed lives and displaced thousands.
Serving as a key water reservoir for irrigation and potable water supply in Maiduguri and surrounding communities, its rehabilitation is seen as critical to the state’s recovery.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony in Alau community, Jere local government council, Governor Zulum described the project as a lifeline for the people of Borno.
“This groundbreaking ceremony is a testament to the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to rebuilding Borno State, not just in terms of infrastructure, but in restoring the livelihoods and dignity of our citizens,” Zulum stated.
He highlighted the dam’s significance, noting that its rehabilitation would enhance agricultural activities, improve water supply, control flooding, and drive economic diversification and community empowerment.
“The project will significantly boost irrigation capacity, allowing farmers to cultivate more land, increase their yields, and contribute to food security. This will create employment opportunities and spur economic development in the state,” the governor added.
Zulum expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for swiftly approving the project, emphasizing the crucial role of water resources in sustainable development.
Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, who was the special guest at the event, outlined the phased approach to the dam’s reconstruction.
“Phase one, which will run from February to September 2025, will focus on critical interventions to mitigate immediate flood risks. Phase two, beginning in October 2025, will involve extensive dredging and structural enhancements to ensure the dam’s long-term functionality and resilience,” Prof. Utsev explained.
He further noted that once completed, the dam would significantly improve potable water supply, control flooding, support irrigation farming, and revamp socio-economic activities in the region.
Borno State Commissioner of Water Resources, Engineer Tijani Goni Alkali, also commended the federal government for its swift intervention, emphasizing the dam’s vital role in the state’s agricultural and economic sustainability.
In addition to the dam reconstruction, Governor Zulum announced the approval of a primary school and a hospital for the Alau community to enhance access to education and healthcare.
“I have approved the construction of a primary school and hospital for Alau community to ensure the development of the area,” the governor declared, urging residents to support the projects and cooperate with contractors.
The reconstruction of Alau Dam, as noticed by WorldClass247News, is a major milestone in Borno State’s post-disaster recovery efforts, with Governor Zulum reaffirming his administration’s commitment to rebuilding critical infrastructure and improving the lives of residents.
