Governor Hyacinth Alia of. Benue state, has condemned the killing of the state Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Alhaji Ardo Risku, and his friend, describing the incident as a tragic setback to the state’s ongoing peace efforts.

In a statement issued on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, the governor expressed deep shock and sadness over the reported killings, noting that the incident occurred at a time when Benue State was witnessing significant improvements in peace and security across several local government areas.

Governor Alia said the attack was not only a tragedy but also a deliberate attempt to undermine the peace and reconciliation initiatives pursued by his administration.

“It is deeply regrettable that this unfortunate incident occurred shortly after a security meeting,” the governor said.

He described the killing of a community leader and peace advocate as a serious blow to ongoing dialogue and cooperation among stakeholders working towards lasting peace in the state.

The governor directed relevant security agencies to immediately launch a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident, identify and apprehend those responsible, and ensure they are swiftly brought to justice. He also ordered enhanced security measures to protect community leaders involved in peace-building and security efforts.

While expressing regret over the incident, governor Alia urged members of MACBAN and the general public to remain calm and law-abiding, warning against any actions that could escalate tensions.

“We must not allow those who profit from chaos to succeed in inciting further violence or disrupting the peace we have taken time to build,” he said.

Governor Alia extended his condolences to the family of the late Alhaji Ardo Risku and the entire MACBAN community, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sustaining peace in the state.

“Our administration remains resolute: Benue is a home for peace, and we will not allow the shadows of the past to eclipse the bright future we are currently building,” he added.
