The Abia State Government has issued a stern warning to motorists and tricycle operators flouting traffic regulations, signaling a zero-tolerance approach to violations.
It would be recalled that the State Harmonised Taskforce, has earlier raised alarm over the increasing number of one-way driving cases, disobedience to traffic wardens, and violations of traffic light signals, particularly in the bustling commercial hub of Aba.
In a statement released by Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, the taskforce revealed that these infractions have caused numerous fatal accidents, including head-on collisions and pedestrian deaths, claiming innocent lives, especially in Aba and along the Umuahia-Aba Expressway last year.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to improving road infrastructure in Aba, Umuahia, and other parts of the state to facilitate smooth traffic flow and promote a more organized road network.
However, it emphasized that no motorist, regardless of status, is exempt from obeying traffic laws.
To address the issue, the government has directed security agencies, the Abia State Harmonised Taskforce, and the Abia State Traffic and Safety Management Agency to strictly enforce traffic regulations.
Violators caught driving against traffic will face severe penalties, including arrest, prosecution, heavy fines, and possible forfeiture of vehicles or tricycles.
The government, also urged all road users to comply with traffic laws to prevent further loss of lives and ensure safer roads across the state.
