A joint security team led by the Nigerian Army has rescued all 16 persons abducted by suspected kidnappers in Kogi state.

The victims were kidnapped on Sunday, August 9, 2026, when armed criminals attacked commuters along the Ojuwo–Ajengo–Memarebo and Ojiwo–Itobe roads in Ofu local government council of the state.

According to the Nigerian Army, troops of 21 Battalion, working with personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Lugard, the Nigeria Police Force, local vigilantes and hunters, launched a search-and-rescue operation after receiving credible intelligence that the victims had been taken to the vicinity of Adumu Community in Dekina local government area.

The security team reportedly made contact with the fleeing kidnappers during the operation, leading to a fierce gun battle.

The Army said the kidnappers, overwhelmed by the superior firepower and coordinated assault of the security forces, abandoned all 16 captives and fled into the surrounding forest with gunshot wounds.

The rescued victims comprised six adult males, six adult females and four children. They are currently undergoing documentation and medical assessment before being reunited with their families.

However, the operation recorded casualties among the security team. One local hunter who participated in the operation was killed, while a police officer sustained injuries and is receiving medical treatment.

The Nigerian Army commended the bravery of the personnel and local security stakeholders involved in the operation, while describing the successful rescue as evidence of the effectiveness of sustained joint operations against kidnapping and other violent crimes.

The Army also praised members of the public for providing timely and credible information, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the appropriate security agencies.

The statement was signed by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, on August 10, 2026.
