Operatives of the Zamfara State Police Command have arrested a 30-year-old man, Umar Sani, after intercepting him with 100 rounds of live ammunition along the Zamfara–Katsina border.

The suspect was apprehended in the early hours of Friday, April 17, 2026, at about 7:20 a.m., during a stop-and-search operation at a strategic checkpoint on the Yankara axis.

According to police authorities, the operation was based on credible intelligence aimed at curbing the movement of illegal arms across the region.

Sani, a resident of Magami Village in Gusau Local Government Area, was reportedly travelling from Abuja to his hometown when he was stopped by officers. He was riding a red Boxer motorcycle at the time of the interception.

A thorough search of the motorcycle led to the discovery of 100 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, commonly used in AK-47 rifles. The ammunition had been carefully concealed on the motorcycle’s fuel tank, suggesting an attempt to evade detection.

The suspect is currently in custody as detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department intensify efforts to trace the origin of the ammunition and identify other individuals connected to the alleged smuggling network.

In a statement, the Commissioner of Police, A.M Bello, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to dismantling criminal supply chains and enhancing security across the state. He also called on residents to remain vigilant and support law enforcement agencies with timely and credible information.

Police spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, who issued the statement on Saturday, said the arrest highlights the command’s proactive measures to combat the proliferation of illegal arms, a major driver of insecurity in the region.
