President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing prolonged political instability, constitutional violations, and security threats.
As part of the emergency measures, Governor Siminalayi Fubara Deputy Governor Mrs. Ngozi Odu, and all members of the members of the State House of Assembly, have been suspended for an initial period of six months.
The President, in a nationally televised address, expressed deep concern over the worsening crisis in the state, emphasizing that multiple mediation efforts including his personal interventions had failed to resolve the conflict.
He noted that the crisis has paralyzed governance, hindered democracy, and denied the people of the state the benefits of good governance.
To restore order, President Tinubu has appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd), as the Administrator of Rivers State.
The Judiciary, according to President Tinubu, will continue to function, and the Administrator will focus on restoring stability rather than making new laws, with any necessary regulations requiring.
President Tinubu described the declaration as a necessary intervention to protect democracy and ensure stability in Rivers State. He urged all political actors to respect constitutional principles and prioritize the welfare of the people.
