In a video circulating on social media on Monday, Asari-Dokubo, who leads the now defunct Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force, expressed deep disappointment in the Yoruba political class, accusing them of turning their backs on the Ijaw people and the broader Niger Delta region after years of political cooperation.
Former Niger Delta militant leader, Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, has announced his withdrawal of support for President Bola Tinubu and other Yoruba political figures ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing betrayal and broken political alliances.
“The Yorubas have betrayed us. After all we did, they turned their backs on us,” he declared.
He claimed that after benefiting from the sacrifices and support of the Ijaw people, particularly during past elections, Yoruba politicians failed to reciprocate the loyalty. According to him, the South-West has not honored its end of the political alliance forged with the Niger Delta.
Asari-Dokubo stated that he now sees Northern politicians as more reliable partners and would throw his political weight behind them in future national elections.
“The North has shown more consistency, more respect. I am aligning politically with the North now,” he said.
He emphasized that the Ijaw people had stood firmly in solidarity with southern interests in the past, but recent developments have made it clear to him that new political alliances must be formed based on loyalty and mutual respect.
His statement, as noticed by WorldClass247News, comes amid increasing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, potentially signaling a shift in the balance of regional alliances.
