The North East Development Commission (NEDC) was established to address the critical challenges faced by Nigeria’s North-East region, which has endured years of insurgency, economic setbacks, and infrastructural decay.

One of the most pressing issues in the North-East has been the destruction of infrastructure, including roads, schools, healthcare facilities, and homes.

The commission, according to those who spoke with Worldclass247News from the various States of the region, has succeeded in rehabilitating major road networks, improving connectivity and enabling trade within and outside the region.
Through the reconstruction of schools and the provision of learning materials, the commission, according to the people of the region, have reopened avenues for quality education, helping thousands of children return to the four walls classrooms.
Hospitals and primary healthcare centers are not only being rebuilt, but equipped with modern medical facilities and personnel were as well trained to address the healthcare needs of residents.
The commission, according to them, has prioritized economic empowerment to uplift the people of the North-East from poverty. Initiatives in agriculture, trade, and skill acquisition programs, according to the people, have provided residents with sustainable income sources.
“Farmers have been provided with seeds, fertilizers, and modern farming techniques, boosting food production and improving food security.” Said a university don, who identified himself as Jonathan Umar.
Apart from the training in trades such as tailoring, welding, ICT, and entrepreneurship which has enabled thousands of youth and women to become self-reliant in all the six states of the region, small and medium-sized businesses have as well received funding, stimulating economic growth and creating jobs.
The aftermath of the insurgency left many displaced and vulnerable. The NEDC has consistently provided relief materials and support to internally displaced persons (IDPs).
The commission which has not only constructed housing units, but also ensuring that families previously living in camps or makeshift shelters now have permanent homes, was also noticed to have embark on regular distribution of food, clothing, and other essentials, which has no doubt gone a long way to eased the burden on the displaced families.
Programs addressing trauma and mental health have been implemented to help individuals heal from the scars of conflict.
Recognizing education as a cornerstone of development, the NEDC has introduced programs to nurture talent and equip residents with skills for the future, as well as by ensuring that thousands of students receive scholarships to pursue higher education.
A principal in one of the beneficiary communities who spoke with WorldClass247News, said the digital literacy centers established across the region, have begun to prepared youths for the modern workforce, stating that, programs aimed at improving the capacity of educators have enhanced the quality of education in schools.
