The Taraba State Police Command has dismissed allegations circulating on social media accusing officers from the Takum Division and the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) of extortion and harassment of residents in Barkin-Lissa, Takum Local Government Area.
In a statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abdullah Usman, the Command clarified that the claims originated from a communal clash between youths from the Gattati and Barkin-Lissa communities.
The violence, which broke out on December 12, 2024, resulted in the destruction of government and private properties, including signposts for schools, churches, hospitals, and police installations. Several individuals, including a deaf and mute man, sustained injuries.
According to the statement, officers from Takum Division responded following a formal complaint from Councillor Japheth Sanda of Shibong Ward. Suspected instigators of the violence were arrested, but community leaders, including First-Class Chief of Takum, Barrister Sopiya Ahmadu Gboshi, and Takum Local Government Chairman, John Ali Danjuma, intervened and pleaded for their release. The suspects were subsequently freed unconditionally.
As part of peace efforts, a reconciliation agreement was reached, mandating the Gattati community to compensate Barkin-Lissa with ₦1.2 million for damages and medical expenses. The sum, reportedly paid by Mr. Michael Abidemi Monday on behalf of Gattati, was handed over to Councillor Sanda. However, some Gattati youths later accused the police of conspiring with Barkin-Lissa to extort them.
Following a petition, then-Commissioner of Police, Ukachi P. Opara, transferred the case to SCID Jalingo for a thorough investigation. The inquiry confirmed cases of criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, mischief to government property, and causing harm involving both communities. As a result, the ₦1.2 million compensation was refunded, and legal proceedings were initiated.
The Command also refuted claims that an Investigating Police Officer (IPO) had extorted ₦300,000 via ASP Eric Audu’s account. The police stated that the amount was part of the refunded compensation and was misrepresented to discredit the investigation.
Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism and justice, the Command urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation that could incite unrest and assured residents of ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security across the state.
