Five soldiers of the Defence Headquarters Special Operations Brigade lost their lives in a fierce encounter with terrorists in Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The troops launched a coordinated offensive against the Lakurawa terrorist group, successfully neutralizing six insurgents, according to a statement released on Thursday by Lt. Col. Abubakar Abdullahi, the Coordinator of the Joint Media Coordination Centre for Operation Fansan Yamma.
The intense firefight resulted in the recovery of significant weapons and ammunition, including four AK-47 rifles, 160 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and a box of 12.7mm ammunition.
However, the operation was not without heavy losses. “Despite this success, the operation came at a heavy cost, as five gallant soldiers tragically lost their lives in the line of duty,” the statement noted.
The Defence Headquarters reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating terrorism in the region, pledging continued efforts to secure peace and stability in Sokoto and beyond.
This marks the latest development in the ongoing battle against insurgents in northern Nigeria, where military forces continue to face significant challenges.
