Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has approved a ₦1 billion annual bursary scheme for students of Edo origin studying in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Fred Itua, announced the initiative in a statement issued in Benin City.
According to the statement, the governor made the pledge during a recent town hall meeting with youths, following appeals from Edo youth leaders who urged the government to support indigenes pursuing higher education.
Governor Okpebholo said the bursary, to be disbursed yearly, aims to ease the financial burden on students and their families.
He noted that eligibility would be verified through applicants’ local governments of origin to ensure that only genuine Edo indigenes benefit from the scheme.
He added that the initiative is part of his administration’s broader efforts to promote educational access, academic excellence, and youth empowerment in the state.
Details on the application process and timelines for the bursary are expected to be released soon by relevant government departments and agencies.
