The Edo State House of Assembly has passed a bill seeking to extend the retirement age of magistrates, presidents of area customary courts and state counsel in the Ministry of Justice from 60 to 65 years.

The bill, titled A Bill for a Law to Amend the Edo State Retirement Age of Magistrates and Presidents of Area Customary Courts, 2025, also provides for other connected purposes.

The passage followed the consideration and adoption of the report of the Joint Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights and Public Petitions; and Rules, Business and Government House.

The report was presented by Addeh Isibor, member representing Esan North East 1 Constituency, and contained six findings and three recommendations.

Considering the report at the Committee of the Whole, the lawmakers approved the proposed extension of the retirement age of magistrates, presidents of area customary courts and counsel in the Ministry of Justice from 60 to 65 years, or 40 years of service, whichever comes first.

Following the passage of the bill, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Yekini Idaiye, directed the Clerk, Alhaji Yahaya Omogbai, to transmit clean copies of the legislation to the Edo state governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for assent.

Meanwhile, the Assembly also adopted a new Business Calendar for the second quarter of the fourth session of the Eighth Assembly for 2026.

Presenting the calendar during plenary, the Majority Leader, Hon. Sunny Ojiezele, said the House would sit for 11 days in September, 20 days in October and 21 days in November.

With the adoption of the calendar, the Assembly is expected to hold a total of 52 sitting days in the final quarter of the year.
