The death toll from recent herdsmen attacks in Benue State has risen to 20, following fresh discoveries in Ukum and Logo Local Government Areas. Security operatives and local residents continue search operations across affected communities in the Sankera axis.
Governor Hyacinth Alia, providing an update confirmed that five bodies were initially recovered from Gbagir and taken to the mortuary. Two additional bodies were later discovered by civilians searching for missing relatives. In one case, security personnel provided protection as a grieving family in Gbagir conducted a swift burial for their loved one.
Responding to coordinated attacks in Logo, police authorities recovered twelve more bodies, also deposited in a mortuary. The governor described the incidents as a suspected coordinated assault by armed herdsmen across multiple communities.
Governor Alia reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to safeguard lives and property, urging residents to remain vigilant and provide timely intelligence to security agencies.
In a bid to tackle the growing security crisis, the governor announced that a high-level security meeting will be held on Monday at the palace of the Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty James Ortese Ayatse, in Gboko.
