The Anambra State Police Command has reiterated that motorists using tinted-glass vehicles are required to obtain the appropriate permit in line with existing regulations.
The Command said the requirement was primarily aimed at enhancing public safety, security and effective policing across the state.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the clarification followed an incident in which police officers on duty reportedly rejected a N200,000 bribe offered by a motorist stopped for using tinted glass without the required permit.
According to the Command, the officers refused the money and instead directed the motorist to either remove the unauthorised tint from the vehicle or obtain the appropriate permit where applicable.
The Command commended the officers for what it described as discipline, integrity and commitment to professional policing.
It said the officers’ rejection of the bribe demonstrated the resolve of the command, under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, to enforce the law without compromise.
The police further explained that the tinted-glass permit requirement was not intended to harass or inconvenience law-abiding motorists, but to ensure that vehicles with tinted windows were properly regulated for security purposes.
It noted that limited visibility into vehicles could create operational challenges for law enforcement, particularly in situations where the identities or activities of occupants need to be established.
The Command said vehicle owners who do not wish to obtain a tinted-glass permit could have the tint removed from their vehicles.
It consequently advised motorists and vehicle owners to comply with applicable regulations and desist from offering money or other inducements to police officers in an attempt to evade lawful enforcement.
The Commissioner of Police also urged members of the public to report any officer who demands money in connection with tinted-glass enforcement or any other police duty.
He assured that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken against any personnel found culpable.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to professional, accountable and people-oriented policing, while pledging to work with residents and other stakeholders to sustain a safe and secure environment across Anambra state.
