The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has condemned the recent attack on members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the development as an internal party crisis that spiraled out of control.
In a statement personally issued on Tuesday night, the governor expressed sympathy with the affected members, lamenting that certain elements allegedly took advantage of the state’s peaceful environment to perpetrate violence.

Patrick Akhere Ebojele, the governor stated that the importation of thugs and miscreants from outside Edo State under the guise of political activities is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
“As peace-loving people, the importation of thugs and miscreants from outside the state under the guise of party politics remains totally condemned and will not be tolerated going forward,” the statement read.
Governor Okpebholo stressed that, as Chief Security Officer of the state, he would not allow Edo to become a theatre of conflict in the name of political rivalry. While noting that the exact motive behind the attack remains unclear, he suggested that the incident may have been aimed at tarnishing the state’s reputation as one of the most peaceful in the country.
He further stated that no form of political blackmail would deter Edo residents from supporting a government they believe in, emphasizing that politics should focus on performance, meaningful engagement, and sustained efforts to earn public trust.
“This is what we are known for, and we will remain committed to that path,” he added.
The governor argued that resorting to violence for political advantage indicates a lack of credible value to offer the electorate. He maintained that as a leading political force in the state, his party welcomes constructive opposition and would not be intimidated by blackmail or what he described as self-inflicted attacks.
While sympathizing with ADC members and condemning the violence, Governor Okpebholo advised the party to avoid directing accusations outside its ranks, suggesting that the incident appeared rooted in internal disagreements.
He called on Edo residents to remain calm and continue to uphold the peace for which the state is known, urging them not to allow the episode to create a negative perception.
“Edo remains a peaceful state, and no one can take that away from us,” he affirmed.
The governor also cautioned opposition elements against actions capable of causing unrest, insisting that political parties must resolve internal disputes before organizing public events. Any attempt to incite crisis under the cover of political activities, he warned, would be firmly addressed.
Governor Okpebholo further directed the police and other security agencies to remain vigilant and closely monitor political gatherings to prevent potential violence, reiterating his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property across Edo State.
