The Executive Chairman of the Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC), Disu Kamor, has praised hijab advocates worldwide for their efforts in promoting understanding, acceptance, and respect for Muslim women who choose to wear the hijab.
In a statement commemorating World Hijab Day, Kamor called for greater inclusion and an end to discrimination against hijab-wearing women and girls.
He noted that these advocates have played a key role in breaking stereotypes and fostering peaceful coexistence across communities.
While acknowledging progress in global awareness, Kamor expressed concern over ongoing challenges in Nigeria. He highlighted cases of discrimination, harassment, and exclusion faced by Muslim female students in several public schools, particularly in southern parts of the country, due to restrictive hijab policies.
According to him, such practices violate constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion and expression and should not be tolerated in a pluralistic society.
Kamor reaffirmed MPAC’s solidarity with hijab-wearing women and girls, describing the hijab as a symbol of faith, identity, and resilience.
He urged them to remain steadfast, emphasizing that confidently wearing the hijab remains a powerful way to assert and protect their constitutional rights.
He also called on governments, educational institutions, and community leaders to dismantle discriminatory policies and promote inclusivity, respect, and mutual understanding.
Addressing hijab advocates, Kamor encouraged them to continue their work, stressing that collective action is essential to building a society where every woman can practice her faith with dignity.
He concluded by reminding Muslim women that they are part of a long and unbroken tradition of faith dating back to the time of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), and that they are supported by a global community of believers.
World Hijab Day is observed annually to raise awareness about the hijab and to stand against discrimination faced by Muslim women worldwide.
