Two people were killed on Monday in a fatal road traffic crash along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, while world-renowned boxer Anthony Joshua was rescued with minor injuries, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed.

The crash occurred around noon near the Sinoma area, close to Sagamu, and involved a black Lexus Jeep conveying Joshua and a stationary commercial truck. According to the FRSC, operatives from the Ogun Sector Command arrived at the scene within three minutes of being alerted, enabling prompt rescue operations, traffic control, and prevention of further accidents.

A total of five adult males were involved in the incident. Two died at the scene, one sustained injuries, and two others escaped unhurt. Joshua was rescued alive and treated for minor injuries. The injured victim was evacuated to a medical facility, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Ajaka, Sagamu.

The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division was notified for further investigation.

Preliminary findings by the FRSC indicate that the Lexus Jeep, with registration number KRD 850 HN, was suspected to have been travelling at excessive speed.

The vehicle reportedly lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and collided with a stationary red Sinotruck parked by the roadside. Excessive speed and wrongful overtaking were identified as the likely causes of the crash.

The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured, including Anthony Joshua, a speedy recovery.

The FRSC reiterated its call on motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking and excessive speed, particularly on high-speed corridors such as the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Road users were urged to exercise patience, maintain lane discipline, and prioritise safety, especially during the festive travel period.

The agency said it remains committed to ensuring safer roads through prompt emergency response and sustained public education aimed at reducing road traffic crashes and fatalities nationwide.
