The Delta State Police Command has dismissed allegations circulating on social media that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of “B” Division in Warri extorted ₦250,000 from a suspect.
In an official statement, the command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, described the claims, as unfounded and misleading.
According to Edafe, the suspect, identified as Godstime Edesiri, was arrested on December 3, 2024, following investigations that traced his phone to a SIM card used in the theft of a Samsung Galaxy A05s and the fraudulent transfer of ₦215,000 from the victim’s bank account.
Edafe explained that the suspect had proposed an out-of-court settlement but was instead arraigned on January 14, 2024, on charges of conspiracy and theft, adding that, he is currently remanded at Okere Prison in Warri.
The command called on journalists and activists to verify their reports with the Police Public Relations Office to prevent the spread of misinformation.
“We urge the public to seek clarity before publishing such claims, as false information can harm the reputation of officers committed to serving the public,” Edafe said.
