The Chief of the UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, has urged the Taraba State Government to sustain progress made under the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (Gavi) initiative.
Speaking at a handover event in Jalingo, she commended the state for improving immunization coverage and reducing child mortality but stressed the need for continued funding, policy implementation, and community engagement.
She also called for the timely release of primary health funds and the absorption of Gavi-trained health workers into the state’s civil service.
Supporting UNICEF’s position, WHO State Coordinator Dr. Nuhu Ningi emphasized local investment in immunization programs, while the State Primary Health Care Development Agency pledged to work closely with the government to sustain Gavi’s achievements.
In response, the Head of Service, Dr. Ahmed Kara, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and vaccine distribution.
The Gavi partnership, established through a 2022 MoU with UNICEF and the Taraba government, aims to ensure all children, including those in remote areas, receive essential vaccinations.
