A joint operation by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), the South African Police Service (SAPS), and private security has led to the arrest of five suspects involved in an armed robbery in Orange Grove.
The suspects, two women and three men, were apprehended on Sunday morning, March 2, 2025, following a swift police response.
At around 06:45 AM, officers refueling at a BP filling station on Louis Botha Avenue were approached by a distressed man who reported that he had just been robbed at the intersection of 7th Street and Louis Botha Avenue .
According to the victim, five individuals in a red Volkswagen Jetta had stolen his money and cellphones and even transferred funds from his bank account to their own.
Police immediately took action, bringing the victim along to identify the suspects. After calling for reinforcements, officers were said to have tracer the suspect vehicle to a location near Pick ‘n Oay in Bramley View.
With support from JMPO CCTV, Tactical Response Units (TRU), SAPS. and private security officers moved into the mall and successfully apprehended all five suspects.
Authorities recovered the stolen money and cellphone, which were found in the suspects’ possession.
The individuals have since been charged with robbery and possession of stolen property and are currently in custody at Norwood SAPS, awaiting a court appearance.
Officials have praised the swift and coordinated police response, reaffirming their commitment to tackling crime in Johannesburg.
