In an effort to restore peace and promote lasting harmony after a wave of violent clashes, the Taraba State Police Command has held a high-level peace and reconciliation meeting in Jalingo, the state capital.
The meeting, convened just days after deadly unrest rocked several communities in the region, brought together key stakeholders including traditional leaders, council officials, and representatives of religious and cultural groups.
Areas affected by the recent violence include Bandawa, Munga Doso, Nguroje Jabu, Wuro Guga, and surrounding localities, where lives were lost and properties worth millions of Naira were destroyed.
Chaired by the Taraba State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel S. Bretet, the dialogue aimed to ease tensions and chart a course for peaceful coexistence.
Participants shared their traumatic experiences and raised concerns about the potential for retaliatory attacks, while also expressing appreciation for the swift response of security agencies.
In his address, Commissioner Bretet emphasized the critical need for unity and cautioned against the spread of hate speech and misinformation, warning that such actions could further inflame the situation.
He reaffirmed the police command’s resolve to uphold law and order and issued a stern warning that any future acts of violence would be met with firm legal consequences.
The Chairman of the affected Council area also praised the initiative and lauded the role of security operatives in containing the violence. He called on community leaders and residents to sustain dialogue and cooperation with security agencies to ensure lasting peace.
