The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the growing political crisis in the state, following the controversial impeachment of Oredo Local Government Chairman, Tom Obaseki.
Speaking at a press conference in Benin City, the PDP caretaker committee chairman, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, described the impeachment as unlawful, alleging that it was carried out by 12 individuals posing as councilors who forcibly entered the council secretariat.
Dr. Aziegbemi accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led state government of undermining democratic processes and orchestrating a campaign of intimidation and harassment against local government chairmen across the state’s 18 LGAs.
“This impeachment was not conducted through due process but instead by imposters acting on behalf of the APC-led administration. It amounts to a coup against democracy,” Aziegbemi said.
The PDP leader expressed concern over what he called a deliberate attack on local governance in Edo State. He urged President Tinubu to intervene immediately to ensure adherence to democratic principles and prevent a breakdown of law and order.
“This slide into anarchy is deeply troubling. We call on the President to act swiftly to stabilize the situation and hold those responsible accountable,” Aziegbemi added.
The PDP demanded the immediate reversal of Tom Obaseki’s impeachment and warned that further disregard for the rule of law could result in widespread political instability in Edo State.
The call for presidential intervention, as observed by WorldClass247News, underscores the escalating tensions surrounding local governance in the state.
