The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the establishment of a College of Medical Sciences at Adamawa State University, marking a significant step toward expanding medical education and healthcare delivery in the state.
A delegation from the commission, led by Professor Auwal Abubakar, presented its findings to the Adamawa State Government following an assessment visit. The panel emphasized the need for adequate manpower to support the proposed 24 departments within the new college.
Speaking during the briefing, the Deputy Governor of Adamawa State, Kaletapwa Farauta, said the plan to establish the college had long been underway. She reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to ensuring the successful takeoff of the institution, pledging sustained support.
Farauta noted that the health sector remains a top priority of the administration led by Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, adding that the proposed college would strengthen healthcare delivery and improve access to medical services for residents.
As part of its evaluation, the NUC panel visited a specialist hospital in the state to assess its suitability for upgrade into a teaching hospital. The team also inspected facilities at the university in Mubi, expressing satisfaction with the available infrastructure and equipment.
The visit followed a formal application by Adamawa State University to establish a College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences. According to the panel, preparations for the project are already at an advanced stage.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Clement Augustine, welcomed the development and commended Governor Fintiri for his support toward the realization of the long-anticipated medical college.
