The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to urgently address the deplorable condition of the Jalingo-Numan road, threatening mass protests if no action is taken.
NANS President, Lucky Emonefe, made this announcement on Saturday during the 3rd Inauguration Ceremony of the North East Zonal Executive Council, held in Jalingo.
Describing the road as a “death trap” and one of the worst in the country, Emonefe stated that the poor state of the Jalingo-Numan road poses a significant risk to students in the North East.
“We have declared a state of emergency on the Jalingo-Numan road. The road is a death trap, especially for Nigerian students in the North East.
We are giving the Federal Ministry of Works 14 days to ensure the contractor returns to the site. If no action is taken, NANS will relocate its national secretariat from Abuja to the North East,” Emonefe warned.
In addition to highlighting the critical infrastructure issue, the NANS president praised Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State for his pro-student initiatives, including the implementation of free education and a 50% reduction in tuition fees for tertiary institutions. Emonefe described Kefas as “the best education-friendly governor in Nigeria” and urged other state governors to emulate his policies.
Furthermore, Emonefe expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for introducing the student loan scheme under the “Renewed Hope Agenda,” which he said had greatly benefited Nigerian students. He encouraged students nationwide to support the Tinubu administration to ensure its success.
NANS has vowed to keep advocating for better infrastructure and policies that improve the welfare of students across the country.
