The Kogi State Police Command has clarified the events leading to the death of a wanted suspect, Muhammed Kassim, popularly known as Enemi, in Idah, Kogi State, amid unverified reports circulating on social media.
In a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, William Ovye Aya, the Police said Kassim had been on their wanted list over allegations of criminal conspiracy, illegal possession of firearms, gun running, and cult-related activities.
The Command revealed that Kassim’s name surfaced during investigations into an arms trafficking syndicate following the arrest of one Mohammed Amedu by the Department of State Services (DSS) on June 22, 2025.
Amedu’s arrest was based on intelligence from the Office of the National Security Adviser, and he reportedly confessed to his role in the syndicate, naming Kassim and others as accomplices.
Further investigation indicated that Kassim had allegedly purchased 20 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition to test an AK-47 rifle believed to be in his possession. The case led to the arrest of five additional suspects and the recovery of two locally made Beretta pistols.
On July 7, operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) were deployed to Idah to invite Kassim for questioning. However, he escaped from his residence upon noticing the officers, prompting surveillance efforts to track his movements.
Acting on fresh intelligence, officers from the Idah Division attempted to apprehend him at a known location. According to the Police, Kassim resisted arrest with the help of alleged gang members, who reportedly attacked the officers with cutlasses, stones, and other weapons.
During the struggle, Kassim allegedly attempted to disarm an officer, resulting in an accidental discharge that struck him in the leg.
The Police said Kassim was subsequently taken away by his associates and later died from the injury in an undisclosed location.
The Command noted that investigations are still ongoing, and all arrested suspects will face prosecution upon the completion of the inquiry.
