The Katsina State Government has launched a pilot program to assess the performance of locally assembled electric tricycles as a potential solution for the state’s commercial transportation needs.
At the handover ceremony of five electric tricycles, manufactured by the indigenous company IRS, Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda stated that the decision to purchase in bulk would depend on the results of this trial phase.
“We will evaluate the durability and maintenance of these tricycles during the test phase before making further commitments,” Governor Radda said.
He directed the leadership of the Commercial Tricycle Operators Association to nominate five trusted members to participate in the pilot program, emphasizing the need for honest feedback on the vehicles’ profitability and real-world performance.
Highlighting the innovation behind the electric tricycles, the Technical Assistant in the Department of Power and Energy, Engr. Kabir Abdullahi, explained that each vehicle features a 450-watt solar panel and a battery system capable of powering the tricycle for up to 150 kilometers with a maximum load of 300 kilograms.
“This technology offers an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative, reducing fuel expenses and providing quiet, sustainable transportation,” Engr. Abdullahi said.
The State Chairman of the Keke Napep Riders Association, Jamilu Isiyaku, expressed gratitude to Governor Radda for responding to their request for solar-powered tricycles. He assured fair management of the test vehicles and pledged the association’s full cooperation in the pilot program.
The program represents a significant step toward sustainable transportation solutions in Katsina State, reflecting the government’s commitment to innovation and environmental conservation.
