…Gombe to Host Modern Veterinary Hospital, as L-PRES Pledges More Support
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has restated his administration’s commitment to positioning Gombe State as a leading livestock hub in Nigeria through sustained infrastructure development and strategic policy implementation.
The governor made this known while hosting the National Project Coordinator of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, Malam Sanusi Abubakar, who led a two-day technical mission to the state to assess ongoing projects and consult with key stakeholders.
Describing L-PRES as a critical partner in the state’s agricultural advancement, Governor Yahaya commended the project’s numerous contributions, especially the recent approval for the establishment of a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital in Gombe.
He said the facility aligns with his administration’s broader livestock transformation agenda, aimed at driving economic growth, enhancing food security, and creating employment opportunities.
In response, Malam Sanusi Abubakar lauded the governor’s forward-thinking policies, particularly the establishment of the 184-hectare Agro-Livestock Development Zone, which he described as a national model for agribusiness, veterinary services, and livestock innovation.
The L-PRES coordinator also praised the governor’s efforts in reviving the 144,000-hectare Wawa-Zange Grazing Reserve, noting its potential to promote ranching and reduce the impact of open grazing and farmer-herder conflicts.
“We are impressed by the progress your administration has made, especially in addressing water infrastructure challenges at the Wawa-Zange Reserve, which has significantly hindered livestock productivity in the past,” Abubakar stated.
He further revealed that L-PRES plans to complement these strides with additional investments, including the development of feedlots, milk collection centres, access roads, and other key infrastructure aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability in the livestock value chain.
Abubakar applauded Gombe State’s participation in the pilot phase of the Private Veterinary Practice (PVP) Programme, placing it among only four states selected nationwide. He noted that the state’s exceptional performance has earned it the right to host a modern veterinary hospital that will support the ongoing construction of an ultramodern abattoir and an international livestock market.
The facility, when completed, is expected to serve as a regional hub for veterinary diagnostics, disease surveillance, and livestock research.
Abubakar also urged Governor Yahaya, who doubles as Chairman of the Northern Nigeria Governors’ Forum, to champion wider adoption of livestock modernization initiatives across the region.
During an earlier visit to the abattoir construction site, the L-PRES coordinator expressed satisfaction with the pace and standard of work, commending the contractor’s commitment to timely project delivery.
