The Gombe State Police Command has urged residents to exercise heightened caution around rivers, erosion sites, and other water bodies as cases of drowning surge with the ongoing rainy season.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, revealed that four drowning incidents have been recorded in recent weeks across various parts of the state. The tragedies occurred in Hayin Kwarin-Misau (Akko LGA), Bojude (Kwami LGA), Bajoga (Funakaye LGA), and Difa (Yamaltu Deba LGA), involving mainly children and young people who fell victim to fast-flowing rivers, erosion sites, and unprotected water channels.
To curb further loss of lives, the police advised the public to avoid swimming in rivers and unregulated water bodies, especially during heavy rainfall when currents can become dangerously unpredictable. Parents, guardians, and school authorities were urged to closely monitor children and keep them away from water bodies during storms.
The Command also called on communities to install warning signs and fencing around hazardous sites, refrain from crossing flooded areas, and report any exposed erosion sites or drainage hazards to the relevant authorities for prompt action.
“The Gombe State Police Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property and calls on all stakeholders, community leaders, and caregivers to play an active role in ensuring public safety,” the statement read.
