Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has pardoned nine inmates serving various terms in correctional facilities across the state as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The governor also approved the commutation of the death sentence imposed on an inmate, Saidu Abdullahi, serving at the Yola Old Custodial Centre, to life imprisonment.
Those pardoned and discharged include Abubakar Dajo, serving at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Jos; Zabadi Ayuba and Salvation Nyamso, of the Numan Custodial Centre.
Others are Amir Idris, Mohammed Saidu, Yaro Sambo, Buhari Salisu, Urube Samuel and Bamaiyi Amos, who were serving at the Jimeta, Ganye, Guyuk, Yola Old and Kojoli Custodial Centres.
According to a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, the decisions were based on the advice of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy.
The statement noted that, the governor exercised the powers conferred on him under Section 212(1)(d) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.
He said the governor ordered the release of the inmates to commemorate the 2026 Independence Day anniversary.
The statement added that the pardons and commutation took immediate effect, following the completion of all legal formalities with the Nigerian Correctional Service.
