Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has issued a stern warning to political actors plotting to destabilize Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections, cautioning against the importation of mercenaries to fuel unrest.

The Governor made the remarks while receiving the President of the Northern Youth Association of Nigeria (NYAN), Godiya Adams Bogoro, alongside ten other northern youth leaders in Benin City.

He emphasized the need for national unity and called on youths to reject being used as tools for violence and political manipulation.

“Politics is around the corner, and crises are beginning to emerge again,” Okpebholo stated. “Some people want to use youths as instruments of destruction for their selfish gains. We must resist this. The future belongs to our young people, and they must not allow anyone to destroy it on their behalf.”

Recalling reports of mercenary activity during the 2015 elections, the Governor condemned any attempts to repeat such actions, saying, “Those who want to destabilize Nigeria do not mean well. We must stand united and say no to their plans.”

He also addressed the recent unrest in Uromi, attributing it to external forces seeking to stir division. He assured the visiting delegation that his administration is committed to promoting peace across the state and the nation.

“I grew up in the North and understand the value of unity,” Okpebholo said. “The tragedy in Uromi should serve as a rallying point for Nigerians to work together in defending our country against internal and external threats.”

In his remarks, Bogoro commended the Governor’s swift response to the Uromi incident and praised his administration’s dedication to peace and community engagement. He called for stronger collaboration to prevent similar events in the future.

Later the same day, Governor Okpebholo also hosted the Edo State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, where he urged members to steer clear of drugs and violence, stressing that discipline and patriotism are key to building a stronger future.
