The Catholic Bishop of Jalingo Diocese, Charles Hamawa, has called on the Nigerian government to prioritize the welfare and proper equipping of the armed forces, urging leaders to refrain from politicizing military entitlements.
Speaking during an interdenominational church service held in Jalingo in honor of fallen heroes, Bishop Hamawa stressed the need for adequate incentives and equipment to boost the military’s morale and effectiveness in tackling the nation’s security challenges.
“The armed forces must always be provided with what is due to them,” the bishop stated, adding that insufficient equipment continues to undermine their ability to combat insurgents effectively.
Bishop Hamawa also urged the government to grant the military the independence and respect required to carry out their duties professionally.
Addressing the troops directly, he appealed to members of the armed forces to uphold integrity and avoid actions that could damage the institution’s reputation. “Do your work consciously, without bias, and don’t compromise your values. Have the courage to say no when necessary,” he advised.
His comments come amid growing concerns over the readiness of Nigeria’s military to address escalating security threats.
Similarly, 6 Brigade Commander Kingsley Uwa echoed the bishop’s sentiments, urging soldiers, particularly those serving in Taraba State, to remain committed to their mission to protect and serve the nation.
“Let us continue to uphold our values as we strive to protect our nation,” Commander Uwa stated, emphasizing honor, courage, and selflessness as core military principles.
He assured the public that the brigade would persist in collaborating with other security agencies to combat criminal activities and secure the region.
The service underscored the importance of unity, professionalism, and ethical conduct within the armed forces as critical components in overcoming Nigeria’s security challenges.
