Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.
In a letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku cited deep concerns over the party’s current direction, which he said has deviated from its founding principles.
“It is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” Atiku wrote. “However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”
Atiku expressed gratitude for the opportunities he enjoyed within the party, noting that serving two full terms as Vice President between 1999 and 2007 and twice being the PDP’s presidential candidate were significant milestones in his political career.
A founding member of the PDP and a prominent figure in Nigerian politics for over three decades, Atiku’s exit is expected to spark fresh debates about the party’s unity and its preparations ahead of future elections.
He concluded his letter by wishing the PDP and its leadership success in their future endeavors.
As of press time, the PDP has yet to issue an official response to Atiku’s resignation.
