The withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially taken effect today, marking a significant shift in regional dynamics.
In response, the ECOWAS Commission issued a statement outlining transitional measures to minimize disruptions and maintain cooperation.
Despite the exit, citizens of the three countries will still be allowed to use ECOWAS-branded passports and identity cards, enjoy visa-free movement, and continue trading under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS).
Additionally, officials from the departing nations will receive full support in their engagements with the regional bloc.
These temporary provisions will remain in place until a structured framework for future relations is established.
ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to regional stability and cooperation, emphasizing that its doors remain open for dialogue and future engagement with the withdrawing nations.
